【目標】
The aim of this course is to read with understanding and pleasure several adult short stories by Roald Dahl.Emphasis will be on understanding English idioms that are used, and on improving both pronunciation and intonation in reading. We will also consider literary devices used, and the structure of the stories. The class will be conducted in English, and Q and A and expression of personal opinions will be encouraged.
【講義概要】
We will read approximately eight short stories by Roald Dahl. Dahl is perhaps best known as an uthorof children’s stories, such as 《James and the Giant Peach》 and 《Charlie and the Chocolate Factory》. But he was also a writer of very adult stories. These tend to have surprise endings, like O. Henry’s, but with a far darker, more blackly humorous quality than the earlier American writer’s. His prose is supple and distinguished and uses less consciously difficult diction than O.Henry did.
Individual students will read aloud so that help can be given on pronunciation and intonation.
Comments on the text will be made by the lecturer, and questions and comments invited from the students, all in English. If you liked O. Henry, come back for more “tales with a twist in their tails,” but do be prepared for some shocks along the way.
Stories, in order : Taste / Lamb to the Slaughter / My Lady Love, My Dove / Dip in the Pool / Galloping Foxley / Skin / Poison / The Wish
