【目標】
One of the main challenges Japanese students face when they want to speak clear English is their ability to organize their messages and thinking in a logical and well structured manner in order to make their speech concise, effective and natural. The English language has a different way of organizing and expressing information than the Japanese does; consequently that poses many obstacles to natural and nuanced communication.
To address this the course will help students to:
a) map out their messages in a logical way.
b) identify and understand the natural sequence of information.
c) expand vocabulary and grammar skills necessary for natural communication.
d) use appropriate linking devices to express messages with the necessary nuance and overall master the art of speaking using an English brain (i.e. way of thinking and grouping information).
【講義概要】
The first 3 lessons will be devoted to developing the necessary skills and the remaining 5 to practice. The practice will be in the form of mini presentations during which the students will be evaluated based on an established assessment grid by the instructor and fellow students for their ability to organize their messages as taught in the classroom.
Week 1: Introduction to logic in a message and nuanced language- organizing a message with a topic sentence and supporting details-sequencing information.
Week 2: Thought themes and sentence linking- expressing coherent relationships between ideas.
Week 3: The role of grammar and vocabulary; speaking with awareness.
Weeks 4-8: Practice and evaluation of student performance-feedback and advice.
