【目標】
Our purpose is to read with care and appreciation several humorous stories by Oscar Wilde, which are not very widely known. We will work on pronunciation and intonation, on discussing the themes, and on appreciating the humor - rather different from Japanese humor, perhaps. The Wilde 'ghost story' emphasizes the differences between American and British ways of using their common language, to humorous effect.
Wilde is best known for his witty dramas, but the same love of paradox, witty observations on social conventions, and taste for elegant beauty is characteristic of his humorous stories as well.
【講義概要】
We will spend one week each on “The Sphinx without a Secret” and “The Model Millionaire”; and four or five weeks on “The Canterville Ghost.” If time allows, we may read one act of the dramatic comedy “Lady Windermere’s Fan.”
“Sphinx…” centers on a romantic encounter with a mysterious woman. It ends with a deflating surprise. It inspired 谷崎潤一郎’s story “秘密”.“…Millionaire” shows the difference between appearance and reality in a social setting. It too takes us by (pleasant) surprise.
“Canterville…” involves the supernatural and a very natural family. The difference in the manners and habits of Americans and Englishmen is wittily pointed out, very much from an English point-of-view. A kind of ironic cross-cultural criticism can be detected.
