【目標】
The aim of this course is to heighten understanding of modern written English， to consider the nature of literary translation， and to examine specific issues encountered by Prof. Seidensticker and discussed in this work. We will discuss the decisions and choices made by him as translator and consider the reasons for those choices， observing what has been gained and， perhaps， lost. If other possibilities occur to us， we will discuss them as well.

【講義概要】
Prof. Edward Seidensticker was without doubt one of the greatest Anglophone scholar/translators in the field of Japanese literature. He is known for his translations of 源氏物語and other Heian Period works， and equally for his translations of twentieth-century Japanese literature: major works by 永井荷風， 川端康成， 谷崎潤一郎， and 三島由紀夫.
In this collection of essays， Prof. Seidensticker examines problem areas for the translator， discussing the translation of names of animals， birds， insects， and fish; of trees， grasses， and flowers; of things specific to Japanese life， ancient and modern， and not found in the West. He also addresses aesthetic， emotional， and intellectual issues. We will， in the course of eight weeks， read the seven chapters of the text， and discuss in English， occasionally using Japanese words and phrases as seems necessary to ascertain the meaning of difficult passages. This is not， however， a course in translation-
rather， a course about translation. Students with a fair knowledge of English and a strong interest in translation between Japanese and English will be most welcome in class.

【ご受講に際して】
◆It is crucial to prepare for each class by reading approximately seven to eight pages of the text， using the endnotes and a good dictionary.
