This presentation will look at the current state of parental child abduction in Japan, defining what parental child abduction is, and the current state of the issue in international relations and international law and Japanese domestic law. The presentation will explain some of the underlying problems
in resolving this issue, including the issues of domestic violence (DV), and false charges of DV as a tool to hide abducted children from the left-behind parent. Finally we will take a brief look at the current movement to help Japan move forward in signing on to and ratifying the Hague Convention and the progress being made with the Japanese Diet in revising the domestic family law in Japan.
