Memorable Speeches from Shakespeare’s Plays
Shakespeare stands head and shoulders above all other English authors. But his English is so difficult! It was difficult even to the English of his own time. It is not “Elizabethan English” but a
poetic English of his own. But there is music, and there is magic, in his English. He appeals not to the head but to the heart of his spectators and readers. His plays are not his own but are based on the stories, often famous stories, of others. But he gives memorable, dramatic expression to those stories, especially in certain memorable speeches. It is these speeches which we have to learn by heart and so enter into the heart of Shakespeare. It isn’t necessary to “understand” his words with our head, but to feel his words in our heart. Then we find “heart speaking to heart”, or ishin denshin.
